A devotee of fashion and the arts of sewing and design, Janet has had a varied career: couture dressmaking/ tailoring instructor and model for LS Ayers, owner of The Fashion Fabric Shop, textile artist, and her own design studio.
Over her career, Janet assembled a collection of glorious fabrics that are now on sale.
A phone call in 1992 introduced Janet Penwell to a remarkable designer of one-of-a kind fabrics - Douglas Ram Samuj. Samuj began his fabric design career in Australia, then moved to California where he created custom fabrics for legendary costume designer Edith Head, Mary McFadden, and other A-listers.
Samuj began collaborating with top-notch seamstresses in the early 1990s, which is how he met Janet. Samuj passed away in 1994, but Janet still has a number of his unique textiles for sale.
Douglas Ram Samuj used a 4-foot long work table, so textile lengths tend to be 4 feet. He rapidly applied dyes to cotton, silk, and linen. Next, he block-printed and hand-drew designs on the dyed fabric.
The finished textiles have vibrant colors and accents ready for clothing, accessories, and décor.
